The Philadelphia Phillies did not begin the season the way they had hoped, stumbling to an 8-16 start. The club endured a losing streak that lasted nearly two weeks, putting itself in an early hole.
The slow start created plenty of concern throughout the fanbase and ultimately led the organization to move on from former manager Rob Thomson.
“There’s a major shakeup in Philadelphia. The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday morning. Don Mattingly is the interim skipper, with the team’s press release saying he’ll hold that position for the remainder of the 2026 season,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote.
Since the managerial change, Philadelphia has played much better and has started piling up wins. However, the offense has still been inconsistent at times, and the need for another outfield bat became even more pressing after Adolis Garcia's injury.
“The Phillies announced that they have placed outfielder Adolis García on the 60-day injured list with a torn right lat. They recalled outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his active roster spot,” Franco wrote.
The Phillies know their championship window is now, making an aggressive move at the trade deadline a realistic possibility. Bleacher Report’s Timothy Rapp believes Jo Adell could be a strong trade target.
“The Philadelphia Phillies have had a major need for a right-handed bat to protect players like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper in the middle of the lineup this season, which only became magnified when right-fielder Adolis García was put on the 60-day injured list with a torn lat. Adell, 27, is hitting .249 this season with 10 homers, 39 RBI, 33 runs and a .684 OPS. It's been a bit of a down year after he hit a career-high 37 homers last season, but he'd certainly be an upgrade for the Phillies,” Rapp wrote.
Adell would be a solid option to help fill the void left by Garcia, especially considering the elite defensive ability he has showcased this season, including robbing three home runs in a single game. With Garcia likely sidelined for the remainder of the year, Philadelphia needs a reliable replacement.
Adell is playing on a $5 million contract with the Angels and also has a team option for next season. Acquiring him could be a better long-term solution for Philadelphia, especially since Garcia was signed to only a one-year deal. Bringing in Adell would strengthen the Phillies both offensively and defensively in right field.
