Corey Seager trade rumors are a sign Texas faces a bigger decision than anyone is admitting

The Corey Seager trade rumors that surfaced last winter never went away. They just got buried under offseason noise.

Now, midway through a 2026 season in which Seager has been hurt twice, is hitting a career-low .186 and just landed on the 7-day concussion IL for his second injured list stint of the year

So, the trade chatter around him again started getting attention. The Texas Rangers placed Seager on the concussion list on Monday after he collided with Royals catcher Carter Jensen at home plate during the game on Thursday. He stayed in the game and even homered in the third inning, but woke up the next morning with jaw and rib soreness that eventually progressed into concussion symptoms.

Texas sat him for the entire weekend series against the Boston Red Sox before making the roster move official, per ESPN. It is his second IL stint in less than six weeks, as he previously missed 19 games in May with lower back inflammation, returned on June 5 and lasted just five games before this latest setback.

On the field this season, he put up rough numbers. Plus, the 32-year-old hasn't played more than 123 games in a season since 2022 and the injury history is starting to define his tenure as much as the 2023 World Series MVP trophy does.

When trade rumors surfaced last December, GM Chris Young quickly rejected them. "We are not motivated to move Corey Seager," Young said. "We are trying to win a championship in 2026, and in order to do that, we need great players."

However, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, FanGraphs currently gives the Rangers just a 41.2% chance to make the playoffs. Because Seager earns full no-trade protection after the 2026 season via 10-and-5 rights, this represents the final window for Texas to move his expensive contract without facing a player veto.

While Olney notes that rival executives view Seager as a potential trade target due to his high salary, Young  added that "if he has a chance to contend, he'll go for it."

The Rangers are currently sitting at 35-37, placing them 2.0 games behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners in a tightly contested AL West. They are firmly in the playoff hunt, but have very little margin for error.

Ezequiel Duran has taken over at shortstop during Seager’s absence, providing a needed lift by hitting .281/.332/.429. Durán does not possess Seager's star power, but his steady defense and improved offense make him a valuable asset. While management has not acknowledged a problem with Seager, his .186 batting average and frequent injuries tell the story.
