The Philadelphia Phillies are 10-19 on the season, and recently fired Rob Thomson from their manager's spot. The 10-20 New York Mets might soon fire Carlos Mendoza.
Those two teams are among the worst in the entire Major Leagues, and if those poor records were to continue to get worse, a sell-off at the deadline wouldn't be a surprise.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller is predicting the Mets and Phillies, along with the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, will all conduct the same trade deadline plan. But it's not the expected one for a team that's in the middle of such a disastrous start to the year.
Phillies and Mets predicted not to sell at trade deadline
"But none of the other slow starters will admit defeat," Miller writes. "The others are the Blue Jays, Mets, Phillies, and Red Sox - each of whom is very much in 'will be paying a luxury tax' territory. ... it just doesn't make sense for any of those teams to wave the white flag."
While the Phillies and Mets might end up with very poor records come the trade deadline, Miller is predicting that both, along with the Red Sox and Blue Jays, will hold onto their players through the deadline.
For the Phillies, their trade chips would only be Alec Bohm, Adolis Garcia, and maybe Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh, or Jhoan Duran. But the Phillies might be better off keeping all of those players for the rest of 2026, as they likely won't get much back.
The Mets are in a similar boat, with many of the players they could trade away, like Luis Robert Jr., Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta, and Jorge Polanco, all struggling this season or dealing with injuries.

Miller is predicting both teams not to sell off some of their best players at the deadline, even if the season continues to unravel.
Unless it's someone in the final year of their deal, and a package would be worth it, the Mets and Phillies should hold onto their players in hopes of 2027 going better, or a miraculous second-half ascension to sneak into the postseason.
The Phillies, Mets, Blue Jays, and Red Sox all had postseason aspirations coming into the year, but all have been struggling this season.
For the Phillies, especially, conducting a fire-sale at the deadline this year would be a big mistake. They're better-off trading players on expiring deals, if they trade anyone at all.
It's a tricky situation, but one that Dave Dombrowski needs to be smart about. One wrong move, and the Phillies' window of contention could be over.
