14 WNBA players waived in tough day for transactions across the league

The WNBA has reached that tough part of its calendar.

As the preseason moves toward the regular season, teams start waiving players who were on the preseason roster but won't have a spot going forward. The players waived are far from bad basketball players. They're simple transaction casualties from a league without that many roster spaces.

More moves are likely coming, but as of 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, 14 players had been officially waived, according to the WNBA's transaction log.

The Chicago Sky had waived Jordan Hobbs and Megan Nestor.

Four Phoenix Mercury players were waived: Jaime Nared, Aisha Sheppard, Maggie Doogan and Yarden Garzon.

The Toronto Tempo cut ties with Dara Mabrey, Maddison Rocci and Kristy Wallace.

The New York Liberty let Ny'Ceara Pryor and Ashley Owusu go.

And the Seattle Storm waived Elle Ladine, Jalyn Brown and Beatrice Mompremier.

There are a bunch of notable names there. One that stands out is Maggie Doogan.

Doogan was a superstar in college at Richmond but just missed being drafted. And she couldn't even stick on a WNBA roster through the end of April despite being an All-American type of player in this most recent college basketball season.

More moves are likely coming, and for many of these players, they'll have to pursue careers outside of the WNBA.
