Phillies predicted to go 'all-in' at MLB trade deadline regardless of prospect cost

The Philadelphia Phillies are heading towards the 2026 MLB trade deadline in a bit of a tricky situation. On one hand, they need to buy and improve the bullpen, starting rotation, and the right-handed hitting outfield.

But, on the other hand, the way this team is playing lately doesn't instill much confidence. It's a team with a lot of veterans and players nearing the end of their contracts and years in the Majors, including some good to elite players. So, it might be now or never.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale is predicting that the Phillies, regardless of the prospect cost, will be "all-in" at the 2026 MLB trade deadline in what would be a very risky deadline plan for Dave Dombrowski and Don Mattingly.

"Dombrowski will go all in and do what it takes, no matter how many top prospects are needed," Nightengale writes. "He badly wants another chance to return to the World Series."

While the Phillies fan base would surely love to see Dombrowski find a way to add some top-tier players, they also don't want to mortgage the team's future.

Upgrading the rotation, bullpen, and their right-handed hitting outfield spots would be key. But, in a seller's market, the Phillies might need to pay a ton to land some of the top-tier options.

Trading their top prospects like Gage Wood, Francisco Renteria, Ramon Marquez, Bryan Rincon, Aroon Escobar, Aidan Miller, or even Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford could surely help upgrade the big league roster.

But, if they trade too much from their already weak farm system, the Phillies will be in dire straits for the seasons a few years from now.

Sure, if it resulted in a World Series title, it would be worth it. But, even if they found a way to add Mason Miller, Tarik Skubal, and Byron Buxton, a World Series title wouldn't be a guarantee.

Most likely, the Phillies will wind up addressing all of their needs, but with players who are not the top option at their respective positions at the trade deadline.

The Phillies just don't have the prospect capital to land major upgrades at their three key positions of need without mortgaging the future.

But Nightengale is predicting Dombrowski and company will do just that, going all-in for the 2026 MLB season in what might be one of, if not the last year of this iteration of the Phillies roster.
