Phillies get positive update on All-Star pitcher's rehab progress

The Philadelphia Phillies are close to clinching their playoff berth, meaning they'll need to have all hands on deck in the weeks to come if they wish to go far into October. This means the team will need to make the most of the players they have available, as well as get some of those that they're missing back, like Jesus Luzardo.

The All-Star pitcher has been out for a little over a week due to left shoulder inflammation, which has left the Phillies with a gaping hole in their rotation, which was already there somewhat, with the written-in bullpen games already taking a spot in the schedule.

Luzardo is in the midst of a career year, posting a near career-low 2.67 ERA, a record of 14-5, and an SO9 of 11.1; in other words, he's been dominant on the mound. All things considered, there's a case that he's been Philadelphia's strongest pitcher this season, with Sanchez earning four more wins, while Luzardo has posted better individual stats, mainly a FIP of 2.77, the lowest on the team.

That is all the more reason the Phillies need Luzardo off the IL if and when they clinch a postseason spot, and according to a recent report, the 28-year-old is feeling optimistic.

Luzardo feels good, open to pitching in the postseason

As reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury, the Phillies ace is doing better than he was when he first landed on the injury report.

"I feel really good, healthy,” stated Luzardo. "Everything is out of there."

While throwing a full game, especially in playoff baseball, is a lot to ask for in a return appearance, this doesn't faze the 28-year-old, as he's willing to take on whatever role Don Mattingly and the Phillies need him to do going forward.

“Whatever role they need me,” explained Luzardo. “If they need me one inning, two innings out of the bullpen, three innings. I can start."

If Luzardo does make it back on the mound in the postseason, he'll be on the hunt for his first playoff win, as throughout his six appearances, he has yet to get one in the win column.
