Paul Finebaum took aim at Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti on Sunday, calling him the “biggest loser” of the week as pressure mounts on the conference amid declining ratings and a $2 billion private equity deal starting to go south.
During a Sunday appearance on The Matt Barrie Show, Finebaum said Petitti is in disarray right now, criticizing his handling of recent issues across the league.
"There were a lot of winners and losers lately. The biggest loser last week was Tony Petitti and the Big Ten," Finebaum said. "This guy can’t shoot straight right now."
Finebaum said frustration is especially high from the top going down, bringing into question is the league is being mismanaged.
"Ohio State fans hate this Big Noon deal that they’re stuck having to play all the time," Finebaum added. "They don’t like, they don’t embrace this private equity move. You know, they were belly aching about Vegas being the site of the Big Ten media days. They don’t feel comfortable with these new schools in."
Reports this month indicated the Big Ten is considering private investment, a move that has raised concerns among administrators at Michigan and USC. Finebaum added that Petitti’s inherited TV deals have underperformed, saying the Big Ten has been “destroyed” in ratings by SEC matchups on ABC.
Now, all things considered, Finebaum is pumping up the brand he's tied to. But he's not lying at all. This weekend's 'The Game' between Ohio State and Michigan is expected to pull Big numbers. One last effort in a season ran by ESPN in the ratings game.
