"Which play was worse? Caleb’s fumble or McCarthys self sack?" another fan wrote. "Remember when he started talking about himself in the third person after throwing like 150 yards?" a fan said. "He’ll still be doing this shit after a 5 yard checkdown😭," one fan commented. "JJ MID MCCARTHY," a fan tweeted. "Russ will be under center there next season," another fan commented.

McCarthy completed 13 of 20 passes for 143 yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in his NFL debut in Week 1. He led the Vikings to a 27-24 comeback victory over the Bears. However, he has missed several games this season due to a high ankle sprain.

McCarthy's completion rate is 52.9% in his four NFL starts. He has thrown for 842 yards with six touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Kevin O’Connell backed J.J. McCarthy while acknowledging offensive issues

Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell expressed confidence in J.J. McCarthy ahead of the Week 12 game at Lambeau Field. He believes the blame for poor offensive play is not soley on the quarterback but also the team's O-line.

“It’s not only those two guys, but it’s our whole offense 11 guys doing their jobs and it starts with J.J.,” O’Connell said on Saturday, via NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

He noted that McCarthy is strong in practice, and it should translate into game-day confidence.

“We’ve seen him do a lot of really, really good things that should lead to game-day confidence and performance to then get our playmakers involved,” O’Connell said.

The Vikings (4-5) are at the bottom of the NFC North. Their offense is underperforming for several reasons, including injuries to key players. Brian O’Neill is out with an MCL sprain, while Ryan Kelly has missed time with a concussion.

Minnesota often falls behind early, forcing the team to rely more on the pass than on a balanced run.
