Patriots GM, Mike Vrabel ‘disagreement’ revealed over key NFL Draft pick

The New England Patriots predicated their 2025 NFL Draft on getting quarterback Drake Maye as much help as possible. The franchise strengthened its offensive line in the first round with the selection of left tackle Will Campbell while adding elite offensive weapons in the second and third rounds.

Maye had a lackluster supporting cast in 2024 and still put up reasonable numbers in his rookie season. Now with this new core around him, the Patriots’ QB1 will be expected to take another step up in his progression.

Despite the seemingly successful draft, Boston Globe reporter Nicole Yang has just revealed a significant disagreement within the organization over the Patriots’ No. 38 selection. In an interview with the franchise’s executive vice president of player personnel, Eliot Wolf, Yang details how this situation was resolved and the potential prospects being debated at the time.

“According to Wolf, there was a 'productive disagreement' regarding how the team should use the 38th pick. Wolf said the group — himself, coach Mike Vrabel, vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden, director of college scouting Camren Williams, director of player personnel Matt Groh, and senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith — expressed differing opinions on two available prospects.

The conversation ended up a moot point because one was drafted in the five picks before the Patriots on Friday…As for which player the Patriots were also considering? The possibilities are UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger, Iowa State receiver Jayden Higgins, South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori, Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins, and Arizona guard Jonah Savaiinaea.”

Regardless of this disagreement, most pundits believe that the Patriots selected the right player with their No. 38 overall pick. The franchise added Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson, a very versatile and selfless tailback who has already been a part of a championship-winning culture. Henderson’s ability as a pass catcher and protector is exactly what Maye needs in the backfield as a safety valve whenever he’s under duress.

The Patriots were in desperate need of bolstering their backfield and did just that in the second round. Henderson can absolutely be this team’s starting running back in Week 1 and, no matter what, should be an immediate contributor. Overall, it does not seem like this disagreement caused any friction within the franchise. The Patriots are continuing to move in the right direction after this productive offseason.
