Patriots-Bengals trade pitch would bring Trey Hendrickson to NE for 2 draft picks

The New England Patriots have had a busy offseason, highlighted by big additions to their defense. Could they swing a blockbuster trade for Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals?

The Patriots signed Milton Williams to give their defensive line a boost, but Hendrickson would take their pass rush to a new level. He has noted that he will not play on his current deal, and that he is not happy with the communication between his side and the Bengals. His thoughts on his contract situation have ignited trade rumors.

Acquiring Hendrickson may be cheaper than many think. He is 30 years old and will require a new contract from any team that trades for him. Patriots Wire's Cam Garrity suggested the Patriots could get a deal done for him without giving up a first-round pick.

"The cost? Likely a second and fourth-round draft pick," wrote Garrity. "The Patriots acquired a fourth-rounder from the Chicago Bears via the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 NFL draft, and they could use that as part of a deal. They’d be giving up real capital, but for a real star—and one who fits. I have them also getting a fifth back from the Bengals to facilitate this."

The Bengals have been unwilling to pay Hendrickson what he is looking for, showing they are not ready to commit to him long-term. Their first-round draft pick, pass rusher Shemar Stewart, is also sitting out due to a contract dispute. The Patriots could trade for Hendrickson and pay him what he wants.

"As for the contract, Hendrickson would likely command a three-year extension in the $90 million range, averaging $30 million per year with about $50 million guaranteed," wrote Garrity. "The Patriots have the cap space, and unlike many teams, they’re not weighed down by bloated veteran contracts. If you believe in Drake Maye and want to maximize his rookie contract window, this is the kind of move you make."

Hendrickson is a four-time Pro Bowler and has 70.5 sacks in the last five years. Many teams would likely be interested in him if the Bengals give up on negotiating with him, but not every team is going to be able to get an extension done.
