The New England Patriots needed to get Drake Maye a top receiver. Yes, they did have Stefon Diggs, but more was needed.

After the Patriots moved on from Diggs, their attention turned to free agency and what sort of weapon they could acquire. That led the team to sign Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs to be Maye's No. 1 weapon, a move many have liked.

But none more so than Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame.

"Romeo Doubs is going to shine with the Patriots," Verderame writes. "Doubs spent his first four years in Green Bay, where he was a consistent second option but was constantly fighting for targets alongside Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and others.

"Now he’ll be the clear-cut top option on the perimeter as New England moved off veteran Stefon Diggs. While $70 million over four years is a significant investment, Doubs goes to the perfect spot with Drake Maye, Josh McDaniels and the reigning AFC champs."

Patriots' offense set with Doubs signing?

You could certainly make that case.

With Maye, Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Doubs, Hollins, and Kayshon Boutte, the Patriots have a good offensive nucleus to work with.

Of course, being good on paper doesn't always translate to production on the field, but with Josh McDaniels and Mike Vrabel, the Patriots appear to be in a good spot roster-wise.

Can the Patriots take the next step in their development in 2026 with a much harder schedule? You'd like to think they can.

And having Doubs as the top weapon could make this Patriots offense really dangerous in 2026.
