Kansas City Chiefs franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes is deep into rehab after tearing his ACL in Week 14 of the 2025–26 NFL season, but he’s clearly staying aware of the team’s moves as the organization looks to retool its roster following its first playoff miss in a decade.
On Wednesday, the Chiefs made a surprising trade, sending All-Pro cornerback and two-time Super Bowl champion Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a first-round pick (No. 29), a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection.
The move prompted an immediate one-word reaction from Mahomes, perfectly summing up how many felt in Kansas City: “Damn.”

Damn..
— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) March 4, 2026During his time in Kansas City, McDuffie was a key piece of Steve Spagnuolo’s defense on the outside, recording 246 tackles, 5.5 sacks, three interceptions, 34 pass deflections, and 12 forced fumbles.
Kansas City is currently in cost-saving mode, aiming to gain financial flexibility heading into free agency while accumulating draft capital. McDuffie was due a fully guaranteed $13.6 million in 2026 and was on track for a lucrative contract extension — a deal the Rams will now likely handle, as the Chiefs simply couldn’t afford it.
They have already restructured Mahomes’ contract and released Mike Danna and Jawaan Taylor over the past week in an effort to get back under the cap.
