In this guide, we will walk you through the quest, what needs to be done, and how you can survive the dark outcome of Clarissa’s act of love.

Path of Exile: Beginning the Love is Dead quest

When you make it to Act 8, you can pick up the quest by speaking to Clarissa, who can be found in The Sarn Encampment. When you approach her, she will tell you that she has acquired a way to resurrect Tolman. Clarissa believes that only by using the Ankh of Eternity, combined with an Azmerian ritual, can Tolman be brought back to life.

For this, Clarissa asks you to help her once again and retrieve the Ankh from the Quay, an extremely hostile area packed with undead and corrupted monsters.

According to the desperate Clarissa, Veruso, Prima Imperialus, once placed the Ankh in a shrine ages ago. Hargan warns her that Veruso hid the Ankh for a reason, but Clarissa remains determined to use it in a resurrection ritual.

Once you have the quest, go to the Quay, which is located in the eastern parts of The Scarn Encampment. The Ankh of Eternity can be found deep within the zone, guarded heavily by undead creatures and Imperial remnants. The pathway in the Quay can be extremely narrow and packed with monsters, so keep your eyes open when exploring this area.

Once you have picked up the Ankh of Eternity, your current objective will be updated. You will be asked to find Clarissa, who is waiting nearby at a ritual site called the Resurrection Site.

Step 2: Give the Ankh of Eternity to Clarissa

Once you have acquired the Ankh of Eternity, find Clarissa in the Quay region, at an adjacent ritual site. Hand her the Ankh, and she eagerly begins the ritual, chanting ancient invocations to resurrect Tolman.

However, things don't go as planned; dark powers surge out of the Ankh, transforming Tolman into a hostile zombie and not as the person Clarissa loved. The ritual site immediately gets overrun with the undead as your fight for survival begins.

Step 3: Fight and defeat Tolman and the zombies in the ritual site

Once the ritual fails, you will be swarmed with waves of zombies from all directions. To progress, you will need to defeat these undead creatures along with the freshly risen Tolman.

Once you have defeated the smaller enemies in the location, Tolman will begin his assault, now empowered by the Ankh’s dark energy.

This fight can be quite challenging, especially if you don't have any crowd control ability. Keep your distance from Tolman; he uses heavy melee attacks and also summons additional zombies to fight beside him. Once Tolman is dead, speak to Clarissa to progress.

After Tolman is dead, Clarissa is devastated and finally realizes what Hargan said was true. Veruso didn't hide the Ankh in shame, but in fear of its capability. What happened to Tolman must have also happened to Veruso’s wife: the Ankh turning both of them into a lifeless husk.

Clarissa vows that she will do what Veruso couldn't: destroy the Ankh for good. She also tells you that she will return to The Scarn Encampment.
