Pat McAfee learned a tough lesson Tuesday night: no bet, no matter the odds, is a guaranteed one.
ESPN’s premier podcaster was arguably the biggest loser of Team USA’s surprising 8-6 loss against Team Italy at the World Baseball Classic.
McAfee wagered $5,000 on Team USA’s moneyline at -1100 odds with DraftKings, a bet that would have won him just over $450.
McAfee’s rationale for betting five grand on a bet with massive juice?
“WOW I NEED A WIN BAD,” he wrote on social media Wednesday morning, recapping his thought process about the bet along with a screenshot of his ticket. “Just any sort of positive bet would be sweet at this stage of continued losses.. What’s a guaranteed win regardless of the odds?”
McAfee went into more detail on his show Wednesday, admitting that he knew it was not a worthwhile proposition, but his desire to snap his cold streak and love for the Stars and Stripes won out over logic.

Team USA was down 8-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but failed to finish the rally and lost 8-6. Despite his frustration he wasn’t willing to throw too much dirt on manager Mark DeRosa for admitting he didn’t know that the US needed the win to advance.
Team USA needs one of two outcomes from tonight’s Italy vs. Mexico game: Italy to win, or Mexico to beat Italy while also scoring at least five runs. Mexico is a -200 favorite to win on DraftKings.
Now that McAfee’s pockets are $5,000 lighter, he’s rooting for Italy tonight to pull the upset, though it doesn’t seem like he’ll be betting this tournament again.
“You’re doing it for the good of baseball today, Italy,” McAfee said.
