Pat Cummins suffers massive blow as Australia announce squad for Ashes 2025-26 4th Test

Australia captain Pat Cummins on Tuesday, December 23, was ruled out of the remainder of Ashes 2025-26 as they announced the squad for the Boxing Day Test. With Jhye Richardson called up to the squad, Cricket Australia also confirmed that Nathan Lyon will require surgery after sustaining a hamstring injury.

Cummins returned after suffering a lower back injury and delivered a sensational bowling performance to give the hosts an unassailable 3-0 series lead in Adelaide. The 32-year-old took three vital wickets in both innings. Richardson, meanwhile, is in line to play his first Test since December 2021 after a successful return form a series of injuries. He has taken 11 scalps in three Tests at 22.09.

As for Lyon's replacement, Victoria's Todd Murphy has received a recall, edging Matthew Kuhnemann and Corey Rocchiccioli. Murphy, who made his Test debut in 2023, has a credible record in the format, picking up 22 scalps in seven matches at 28.13. After missing the third Test in Adelaide due to vertigo issues, Steve Smith will return for the fourth and captain Australia in Pat Cummins' absence. The New South Welshman will be in a race against time to be fit for T20 World Cup 2026.

Australia to closely monitor Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc ahead of Boxing Day Test

According to cricket.com.au, both Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland have pulled up well as both teams face a short turnaround following the third Test in Adelaide. Nevertheless, the duo will be monitored closely as they have bowled close to 100 overs in three matches.

The hosts have backups in Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett. Cameron Green will also be under some pressure after his lean returns with the bat and would be keen to get a big score, especially with Beau Webster waiting in the wings. Australia will be eager to keep the pressure on England, who are winless in their 18 Tests Down Under.
