We have seen the San Diego Padres and AJ Preller be very aggressive at the MLB trade deadline. The savvy front office executive has no issue parting with top prospects, and will that ideology manifest this summer as well?
Recently, the Padres have been linked to starting pitching, and perhaps there isn't a better 'truly available' option than Minnesota Twins' All-Star starter Joe Ryan.
FanSided.com's Christopher Kline recently wrote:
"Joe Ryan would require another all-out splurge from Preller, but at this point, it's just how business is done in San Diego. Ryan's contract features an additional year of club control, which means the Padres can at least count on Ryan, Nick Pivetta and Michael King to all be on the roster in 2027, along with their premium bullpen arms."
What could Padres give up to make Joe Ryan trade work out?
As noted, AJ Preller may have to give up a lot to acquire an arm like Joe Ryan, but to piggyback off what Kline writes about Joe Ryan being a fit in San Diego, the Padres could send prospects Miguel Mendez and Garrett Hawkins (two RHP's) to make a deal work.
The Padres, by no means, have the greatest farm system, so San Diego might even have to throw in a MLB-caliber player to complete a deal for Ryan, but it's not far-fetched to believe that the Twins wouldn't bite on a pair of top-ish prospects for Joe Ryan.
Joe Ryan is putting together another quality campaign after an All-Star berth in 2025. He's posted an ERA of 3.20 this season over 13 starts and 70 innings already. He has 79 strikeouts and a WHIP just under 1.000. Impressive stuff from Ryan, who figures to be a very hot commodity in August.
