Packers still have a QB problem to solve after Malik Willis left for Dolphins

1 hour ago 2

The Green Bay Packers knew this was going to happen.

They weren't going to be able to pay Malik Willis the necessary money in free agency to keep him from leaving town for a starting job elsewhere -- the destination turned out to be the Miami Dolphins.

It's not a nightmare scenario for the Packers, who still have franchise QB Jordan Love. But it is a matter that still hasn't quite been solved yet.

Green Bay doesn't yet know who its QB2 will be in 2026, and given that Love has missed games in each of the past couple seasons, it's an important role.

Currently under contract behind Love are Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord. Neither of that duo would qualify as a solid backup, at least based on recent impact in the NFL.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky thinks the Packers will still be looking for Love's backup, writing this in a new article on Wednesday:

They knew they would lose Willis, who got $22.5 million per year from the Dolphins, but the only quarterbacks they have behind Jordan Love are Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord. Don't be surprised if they draft a quarterback this spring or possibly even sign or trade for a veteran backup.

There are still some notable veteran names available, including Super Bowl champions Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco and Carson Wentz. Any one of them would feel like at least a comfortable option behind Love.

This year's draft isn't particularly strong on QBs, so it'd be bold for the Packers to take one in the middle rounds and install him immediately as QB2, but maybe that's also possible.

It's just a situation that isn't resolved, which means it'll be worth watching until Green Bay makes some kind of move.
