WWE Saturday Night's Main Event was where John Cena had his final-ever match in the industry as an in-ring performer against Gunther. According to a report, the plans for The Franchise Player were a little different.
Before Saturday Night's Main Event, it was reported that the company would dedicate the first hour of the show to John Cena. The reports received heavy backlash, and the 17-time WWE World Champion cleared the air on such rumors and speculations by stating he's set to close the show, which did happen in Washington.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (WON), the insider reported that Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi was originally listed to close the show instead of John Cena vs. Gunther. The report indicates that the management had other plans for The Franchise Player, which would've been to compete earlier on the card instead of headlining the event.
Luckily, the management decided to close the show with John Cena and allowed him to have a proper farewell following his last match against Gunther.
Hall of Famer thinks John Cena will return to WWE for a storyline
John Cena's final chapter in the industry as a performer ended in a heartbreaking fashion when he smiled and tapped out to Gunther in the main event. While many questioned the booking behind the loss, Bubba Ray Dudley thinks this isn't the 48-year-old legend's last appearance.
Speaking on Busted Open, the multi-time WWE Tag Team Champion explained a scenario where Cody Rhodes would feud with Gunther, and the Men's Grand Slam Champion would return to the Stamford-based promotion as an on-screen character to motivate The American Nightmare to take down The Ring General.
"One day, Cody Rhodes is going to be face-to-face with Gunther... By the time we get there, Gunther will have been built up to a level where he will be the immovable object. He's going to be THAT guy. Cody is going to have doubts, and Cody is going to have a problem with Gunther... One day, like a Force ghost, John Cena will return at the right moment to remind Cody who he is. In my world, that's what I see happening," Dudley said. The Men's Grand Slam Champion also made an appearance on Cody Rhodes' podcast following his retirement in Washington.
