The big concern for the Edmonton Oilers this offseason is Connor McDavid’s expiring deal.
Their captain enters a crucial 2025-26 season without any guarantees that it will not be his last in Edmonton, and the Oilers have to do everything in their power to retain him. One way to do that is by building a supporting cast worthy not only of reaching the Stanley Cup Final for a third straight year, but one that can help McDavid win it.
Edmonton has to address restricted free agent Evan Bouchard, a costly but necessary investment. But, there is another, less expensive player that should be near the top of the front office’s priority list: Corey Perry.
The Oilers and Perry “are trying to work something out,” according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.
The now 40-year-old was okay during the regular season, recording 19 goals and 30 points over 81 games. However, he looked great during their postseason run, netting 10 goals and 14 points while showing he can still play on the top line.
Of course, it helps when McDavid drives the play and draws attention from every opposing skater. But, still, Perry brings a net-front presence, soft hands, and a keen hockey IQ necessary to hoist the Cup.
The future Hall of Fame inductee has miraculously lost in five of the past six Finals, and Edmonton provides him as good a spot as any to earn his second ring (the first coming with the Anaheim Ducks back in 2007).
Assuming this mutual interest is real, expect the Oilers to lock in Perry on a one-year, maybe two-year deal worth no more than $2 million annually.
