Oilers’ Corey Perry gets bad $5 million contract update before free agency

The Edmonton Oilers are in a tough spot.

They've got a lot of money lined up to be shelled out, and they've got a number of players still needing to get paid.

Veteran forward Corey Perry could be one of the unlucky parts of the negotiations.

The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun wrote this on X: "Corey Perry still hopes to re-sign in Edmonton but the pathway to common ground on a deal has been difficult with Oilers’ cap situation. Very possible Perry ends up on the free-agent market Tuesday. But door remains open with Edmonton."

Perry has been viewed as a possible two-year, $5 million total value type of contract. He could very well settle for one year, though, given that he's 40 years old.

He's entering his 21st NHL season. Perry has scored 448 goals with 487 assists in his career.

Of his 20 years, 14 were spent with the Ducks, the team that drafted him. Perry has also played for the Lightning, Oilers, Stars, Canadiens and Blackhawks.

He's going to continue his career. The main question remaining is, "Where?"
