"Not enough teams acting like big dogs" - Blue Jays insider on Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette and other stars' free agency limbo

The Toronto Blue Jays are interested in almost every big free agent, including Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman, but with the New Year now upon us, a massive signing still hasn't come.

According to Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson, there could be plenty of reasons for that. The insider noted that the top teams, who are willing to spend, are waiting for the free agents to sign a short-term contract like the one Bregman did last year. Matheson said the upcoming CBA disruption could also be playing a role in why we are facing a stall on several big names. He said some teams are selling themselves short this offseason.

"When you hear the Yankees talking, they sound like little brother right now. They’re not being the Yankees," Matheson said on The Walk Off podcast. "The Red Sox seem like they want to spend, but they haven’t really laid it on the table yet.

"The Blue Jays have made some savvy trades, but they haven’t really opened up the vault, except they’re the one team that said, ‘Screw it, we have money. We’re going to spend it.’ Everyone else is trying to be smart. And when you try to be smart, a lot of the time you end up looking stupid."

Matheson pointed out that no one is taking the courage to go ahead with what they like, especially big market teams like the LA Dodgers.

"Everyone’s waiting for the other side to blink," Matheson added. "Not enough teams are acting like big dogs right now. I think everyone’s being a little timid because of the Dodgers. "I mean, everybody runs out of money at some point. The Dodgers are a good example of a team that would love Kyle Tucker to say, ‘Screw it, I’ll take $45 million for a year with an opt-out.’ It’s probably never happening."

Blue Jays signs ex-Guardians pitcher in their latest offseason move

The Blue Jays have agreed to a two-year minor league deal with former Cleveland Guardians pitcher Nic Enright. However, the pitcher is coming off a Tommy John surgery and won't be available to pitch next year.

Enright made his MLB debut in 2025, posting a 2.03 ERA while striking out 30 in over 31 innings.

Since he needed UCL reconstruction surgery after the 2025 season, the Guardians DFA'd him and then non-tendered him.
