The opening day of the Nike EYBL Western Maryland Classic is in the books, and things mostly went according to plan.
The event features three teams ranked in the latest edition of The Sporting News Boys Basketball Top 25, including the No. 2 AZ Compass Prep [Chandler, AZ] Dragons, No. 4 Link Academy [Branson, MO] Lions, and No. 11 Wasatch Academy [Mt. Pleasant, UT] Tigers.
AZ Compass Prep and Link Academy were both in action Thursday with the No. 2 Dragons rolling to a 20-point win, 74-54, over the CATS Academy [Boston, MA] Griffins.
Link Academy, meanwhile, survived a physical 63-59 scrap vs. the La Lumiere [La Porte, IN] Lakers in the nightcap of the event's first day.
Wasatch Academy will take the court for the first time on Friday, getting the second day of action started at 2:15 p.m. EST against the Mt. Zion Prep Academy [Lanham, MD] Warriors.
Other Top 50 programs scheduled to be in attendance include Tennessee Collegiate Academy and North Carolina's Christ School, and those two teams were supposed to meet on Thursday. All games at the event involving the Christ School, however, have been postponed per the event website, although no details have been released, yet.
Link Academy center Ethan Taylor (Michigan State) is the top-ranked Class of 2026 senior prospect competing at the event, and the Lions are loaded with Top 100 prospects in SF Tajh Ariza (Oregon), SF Luca Foster (Gonzaga), PG Carlos Medlock Jr. (Michigan State), C Tristan Reid (Mississippi State), and SF Trent Perry (Kansas).
AZ Compass Prep counters with SG Quincy Wadley (unsigned), CG Kaden House (Maryland), and SG Kalek House (Xavier).
Other Top 100 prospects include La Lumiere's duo of PG Jonathan Sanderson (Notre Dame) and SF Jacob Webber (Purdue).
