Nigeria's president addresses Anthony Joshua tragedy following the death of two team members

The boxing world woke up to grim news out of Nigeria as Anthony Joshua’s visit to the country turned tragic. The former heavyweight champion was involved in a fatal road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two members of his inner circle.

Joshua was travelling in a convoy near Sagamu when the SUV he was in lost control and struck a stationary truck. Preliminary reports from local authorities point to excessive speed and a tyre burst during an attempted overtake.

The impact proved fatal for strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Kevin Latif Ayodele, both central figures in Joshua’s career for over a decade. Joshua was pulled from the wreckage and taken to hospital in Ogun State, where he remains in stable condition under observation.

Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, addressed the situation on X, writing:

"I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries. This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride."

He added:

"I have spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, in the recent accident. I wished him a full and speedy recovery and prayed with him. AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care. I also spoke with his mother and prayed for her. She was deeply appreciative of the call."

Tyson Fury joins boxing world in mourning after Anthony Joshua tragedy

The boxing community rallied around Anthony Joshua after the fatal car crash in Nigeria.

Latif Ayodele and long-time strength coach Sina Ghami were killed at the scene, while Joshua escaped with minor injuries. Tyson Fury shared a tribute acknowledging the loss on an Instagram story post. He wrote:

“This is so sad. May God give them a good bed in heaven.”
