The Seattle Seahawks are heading into their second game against the San Francisco 49ers this season. Odds are it won't go their way. The Niners are favored by about a touchdown and they have already beaten the Seahawks in their last six meetings, all of them by eight points or more. The simplest way to explain San Francisco's recent dominance in this rivalry is they have a better roster that's more well-suited to thrive in today's NFL.
That applies to a lot of different dynamics and positions, but one of the biggest ones is their ability to produce yards after the catch - something Seattle has struggled with for several years even as the rest of the league has embraced YAC as an essential element for a modern offense. That doesn't mean they haven't tried to land YAC threats, though. Here's a very late-breaking scoop from Adam Schefter at ESPN about one.
According to Schefter, the Seahawks intended to draft 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel back in 2019 as well as their own star receiver DK Metcalf - and they apparently thought they had a deal in the bag but it fizzled out.
"The Seattle Seahawks wanted and intended to draft both Deebo Samuel and D.K. Metcalf in the second round of the 2019 draft, and thought they had a deal in place to do it, per sources. The Seahawks nearly pulled it off before their plan fizzled late."
A very interesting and timely report. Perhaps the leak from the Seahawks is intended to deflect criticism on a day when there's a decent chance we will see Deebo Samuel roll over Seattle's defense for another 150+ scrimmage yards. There's also a possibility that the Seahawks want it known they're interested in Samuel in the event that he winds up on the trade block this offseason, as he was rumored to be a few weeks ago before the deadline.
That's a pretty remote scenario, though. If the 49ers are going to trade Samuel there are about 30 other team's they'd rather see him go to instead of the Seahawks.
