NFL has Lamar Jackson precedent for DK Metcalf possible punishment, suspension for shoving fan

No two situations are created equal.

But the NFL has at least a bit of a potential precedent to follow when it comes to Steelers WR DK Metcalf shoving a Lions fan on Sunday.

Earlier this season, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson got into a bit of a spat with a fan in Buffalo.

That fan was the one who got in trouble, not Jackson.

This time, it feels like Metcalf was more of an instigator than Jackson was, but the league will have to make that determination for itself.

"Earlier this season, a fan was ejected and banned from Highmark Stadium after slapping Lamar Jackson on the helmet following a Ravens score," ESPN's Brooke Pryor wrote on Monday. "Jackson retaliated by shoving him, but he wasn't punished by the league for the incident."

Multiple reports after the incident have said that Metcalf couldn't have been ejected from Sunday's game, even retroactively, because he hadn't been flagged for anything.

Would the league consider a suspension now? It'd certainly be a costly one for the Steelers with only two games left in the regular season.

Given the negative attention around the incident, it probably wouldn't be a great look for the NFL to let this go by without at least a fine.

Within the next 24-48 hours, the league will likely make some sort of announcement one way or another.
