Brazil and Santos superstar Neymar has issued a promise to his country's fans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer. The experienced forward is aiming for a place in the squad next year after an impressive season in the Brazilian top-flight with Santos.
The former Barcelona man told reporters that he believes that the Selecao are primed for glory in the Mundial next summer. He asked for the fans to trust him and hold him accountable for his utterances. He went on to promise that he would score a goal if Brazil reaches the final.
“We’re going to do the possible and also impossible to bring the World Cup to Brazil. In July you can hold me accountable. Hey Ancelotti, help us! If we get to the final… I 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒆 I’ll score a goal”, he said (via @FabrizioRomano on X).Neymar has not played for Brazil since picking up an ACL and a meniscus injury in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023. The 33-year-old has yet to play under new boss Carlo Ancelotti, who took over the team in June after a far-from-ideal qualification process for the World Cup.
Santos and Brazil legend Neymar has scored the most goals in the history for his country, notching 79 goals for the Selecao. The forward harbours the hopes of being in North America for the tournament next summer, and will be keen to stay fit and available.
Neymar close to Santos renewal: Reports
Brazilian superstar Neymar is close to reaching an agreement that will see him remain at the club for six months more. The 33-year-old is set to reach the end of his contract with Santos this month after he signed a short-term deal with the club earlier this year.
ESPN reports that the representatives of the talented forward have held talks with Santos and their president Marcelo Teixeira. A broad agreement has been reached, with the forward set to sign a six-month deal until the FIFA World Cup next summer.
Neymar had to battle injuries in his time at Santos and played only 30 games for the club throughout this year. He contributed 12 goals and six assists, including five goals in the last four games of the season to avoid relegation. He has prioritized a stay in Santos, and is not looking to move elsewhere despite rumours linking him with a move to another Brazilian side.
