The New York Yankees seem ready to give a young arm an early opportunity in the rotation, and it’s well deserved. Right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler was great in the postseason last year and deserves more.
More is on the way.
According to Jack Curry, the Yankees’ current pitching timeline suggests that Schlittler will be in line for one of the first starts of the year. The timing of his upcoming outings appears to align closely with the early-season schedule.
“Cam Schlittler is likely to start Game 2 for Yankees. Reading the tea leaves, he’s scheduled to pitch on Monday & presumably 5 days later on 3/21. That would give him one extra day of rest to face SF on 3/27. Pitch count will be about 65-70 so Yanks will have full pen behind him,” he wrote.
If that plan holds, Schlittler would take the mound against the San Francisco Giants in San Francisco.
For Schlittler, this opportunity would be well-deserved. Sure, there are injuries, but he’s just as good as any starter in this rotation.
Schlittler was elite in his 14 outings a season ago, posting a 2.96 ERA and striking out 84 hitters in 73.0 innings.
