New York Mets trade proposal adds outfielder coming off 35 home run season for Carson Benge and Jonah Tong

After an offseason that saw the New York Mets get a lot better, some still think they need help in the outfield. It isn’t the worst idea, but just like every trade the Mets will make moving forward, they have to be careful in what they give up.

In a proposed deal from Ryan Shea of SI, the Mets would acquire star center fielder Byron Buxton from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a package of young talent.

Mets receive: Buxton

Twins receive: Ronny Mauricio, Jonah Tong, Carson Benge

From New York’s perspective, the logic is centered on maximizing its championship window.

“The Mets would make this trade because they are in a clear win-now window, and adding Byron Buxton gives them a dynamic, five-tool player who can immediately impact their lineup,” Shea wrote.

When healthy, Buxton remains one of the best players in baseball, but the issue is that he’s rarely healthy.

“His combination of power, speed, and elite defense strengthens both the offensive and defensive sides of the team, providing a boost in run production and overall team efficiency,” Shea added.

For Minnesota, the return would be something it would jump all over, which is why I’m skeptical about this trade making sense for the Mets. Prospect hugging doesn’t always work, but Buxton is injured too often to move Benge and Tong.

He hit .264 with 35 home runs last year, so there’s clearly a ton of talent in the right-hander's bat.
