Mikaela Shiffrin has one last shot to break her Olympic cold spell.
Entering Wednesday, the United States' star skier has failed to finish on the podium in all of her last eight Olympic races, dating back to a tough 2022 Games in Bejing where Shiffrin struggled across six different events.

Despite her incredible track record as a skiing superstar, Shiffrin hasn't found much more luck in Milan. She and Breezy Johnson barely missed the podium in the team combined event, then Shiffrin finished 11th in the giant slalom on Sunday.
The slalom, however, has long been Shiffrin's premiere event — and if she's going to secure her first Olympic medal since 2018, she'll need a strong performance in Wednesday's women's slalom competition. A medal would represent a long-awaited return to the top of the Olympic stage for Shiffrin, nearly a decade after her last triumph in the Games. But with a fourth-place finish or lower, she would officially go another four years without securing some Olympic hardware.
