The New York Mets seem to be closing in on one of their final roster decisions ahead of Opening Day, and a fan favorite youngster looks like he has a shot to win a job.
According to Danny Abriano of SNY, the biggest remaining question is centered on right field, where Carson Benge and Mike Tauchman have been battling for the starting job. However, based on Spring Training, Benge is beginning to separate himself.
The question is whether the Mets want to go with such a young guy in Benge compared to a veteran.
“It feels like the only big question remaining revolves around right field, where the main competitors appear to be Carson Benge and Mike Tauchman. Benge is hitting .367 with a .406 OBP and .839 OPS in 30 spring training at-bats.
“And that doesn't count the opposite-field home run he hit against Team Israel. The 23-year-old has simply looked the part, not just when it comes to his offensive results, but the type of at-bats he's been putting together. Benge has also impressed defensively in right field, while getting a taste of center field as well. At this point, there's no reason to believe Benge's spot is in doubt, even though the Mets aren't ready to formally end the competition,” he wrote.
The 23-year-old looking the part is very important here. Not looking overmatched against big league pitching isn’t an easy task at such a young age.
With Opening Day coming up soon, if the Mets want the best players on the field, Benge should be one of them.
