High-quality three-point shooting has been the name of the game for the Golden State Warriors since Steve Kerr replaced Mark Jackson in the Bay in 2014.
During the Warriors’ golden years (2014-19), the franchise connected on at least 38% from deep each season, showcasing its ability to flourish in a system that prioritizes efficient, high-volume perimeter shooting.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for the Dubs this season, as they finished the year with a mediocre 35.6% long-range shooting percentage. If the seven-time NBA champions want to return to their sharpshooting ways in 2026-27, the organization should pursue the Brooklyn Nets’ 27-year-old three-point sniper, whom Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckey believes is a prime trade candidate.
“Back in January, The Athletic's John Hollinger reported hearing from ‘trusted league sources’ that (Michael) Porter was ‘a lock to move by the deadline’,” Buckley wrote Monday. “That obviously didn't happen, and the Nets might have less incentive to shop him now since they don't control their 2027 first-round pick and therefore have no incentive to tank.”
“That said, Porter is ready to compete right now, and the rest of Brooklyn's roster is absolutely not. The Nets should still explore the opportunities to sell high on his breakout season, because that route could prove far more profitable than buying high on his next deal (he'll be an unrestricted free agent after this season).”
“His supersized role in Brooklyn inflated his stats a bit, but he's still a 6-foot-10 shotmaker with more on-ball utility than he was able to show in Denver (Nuggets). Any team in the market for spacing, scoring, or both could have serious interest.”
When Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield were still on the Warriors’ roster, they were deemed the most valuable assets the organization could include in a trade for Porter. In addition to being linked to the Warriors to start this season, Porter and Golden State were involved in trade rumors during the 2024-25 campaign and 2025 offseason.
Ultimately, Golden State elected to trade their $86 million wing duo to the Atlanta Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis this past February. Although it isn’t far-fetched to assume Porter has fallen off the Warriors’ radar since then, their desire for an above-average floor-spacer could help trade speculation centered on the ex-Nuggets NBA champion forward come back to life.
Porter averaged a career-best 24.2 points per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from beyond the arc with the Nets this year.
The Missouri product is certainly worth another look from the Dubs in the summer.
