Nebraska dominates HCU but Rhule warns Big Ten reality awaits

Nebraska handled its final non-conference tune-up with ease, dismantling Houston Christian 59-7 on Saturday in Lincoln. Yet even in a dominant performance, head coach Matt Rhule left Memorial Stadium with his focus on bigger hurdles ahead.

“I really appreciate the crowd. The people who were there. It was a hot day, and I appreciate them staying all the way to the end,” Rhule opened.

The Huskers jumped out early, piling up 38 first-half points. Rhule praised his team’s efficiency while pointing to areas that still need work. “We scored 38 points, just not happy with the last drive on defense and the last drive on offense,” he said. “That is something we’re going to need is the two-minute offense, so we’ll have to go back and look at that.”

Nebraska used the lopsided score and blistering heat to rotate its roster. “Guys got to play a lot of snaps,” Rhule said. “T.J. Lateef, that’s a golden day for him. Cortez Mills Jr. to make that big play, Isaiah Mozee, all those guys. It was good to get a lot of guys real reps in the second half.”

The coach was measured in evaluating his team at 3-0. “We haven’t played the caliber of teams we’re going to play,” Rhule cautioned. “I think we’re a significantly better team than we have been, but the road gets a lot harder. If we stay where we are right now, we won’t win a lot of games moving forward.”

On running back Kwinten Ives, who broke through with a strong day, Rhule was direct: “I think he is a starting caliber player in the Big Ten, and I’ve always felt that since he was a freshman.”

With conference play looming, Rhule made the challenge clear. “Now we are in Big Ten play. We have to show up every week. We have to improve every week. I think the guys will be ready to go tomorrow.”
