NBA executive reveals harsh truth on LeBron James' future with Lakers

More has been revealed about the future of Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin detailed James' future on Tuesday. McMenamin spoke with an NBA executive who believes the Lakers should part ways with LeBron.

"'The first thing they have to do is move off LeBron," an Eastern Conference front office executive told ESPN. "Let him walk and use the space to retool around Luka (Doncic). Keeping (Austin) Reaves is critical.'"

The executive said Doncic is at his best alongside a ball-dominant guard, and that LA should target a point guard this offseason. McMenamin believes the Lakers would like to retain James.

"If James wants to play a 24th season, he would be welcomed back in L.A., sources told ESPN," McMenamin said.

The Lakers have several key decisions to make this offseason in addition to James. Reaves is eligible for a max contract, as he'll likely decline his $14.9 million player option this summer. Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard will be unrestricted free agents.

LA has already been linked to several players who will be restricted free agents, including Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason and Denver Nuggets guard Peyton Watson. General Manager Rob Pelinka is looking to improve the Lakers' defense and shooting after a relatively quiet trade deadline.

If James does decide to leave LA, it would end a fantastic run with the franchise. He led the Lakers to an NBA Championship in 2020 and has set numerous league records during his time with the team.

The Lakers (33-21) are fifth in the Western Conference, a half-game behind the Rockets. LA returns to the court Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers.
