Ahead of the 2025 Emirates NBA Cup final in Las Vegas, NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed questions, including about the stunning split between the LA Clippers and franchise cornerstone Chris Paul, whom the team abruptly sent home amid reports of internal tension.

When asked about the matter, Silver acknowledged that he was “dismayed … for everyone involved” and said he hoped the future Hall of Famer would be able to conclude his NBA career on his own terms.

Silver, who worked closely with Paul during Paul’s tenure as president of the NBA players’ association, added that he would like to see the veteran guard return to the court.

“I’ve admired [Paul’s] leadership over the years,” Silver said. “I would love to see him finish off the season on another team. He’s already announced this is his last season. I’d love to see him finish strong.”

This season was intended to serve as Chris Paul's farewell tour, reuniting with the Clippers franchise he helped elevate to relevance during the Lob City era.

He was signed to provide leadership off the bench, but as losses mounted and Paul became increasingly outspoken, he reportedly began to frustrate members of the organization.

Details of Chris Paul’s Clippers exit revealed

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne published an in-depth report detailing how the relationship between Paul and the Clippers unraveled.

According to Shelburne, Paul clashed with coach Tyronn Lue and associate coach Jeff Van Gundy. He also had multiple meetings with Lawrence Frank regarding the need to remain positive and avoid behavior the organization viewed as "divisive."

The situation reached a tipping point following a disagreement on the team plane in Miami over defensive schemes. Soon after, Paul met with Clippers president Lawrence Frank in Atlanta, where he was informed of the team’s decision.

“Paul was stunned, sources said, and tried to plead his case,” Shelburne reported.

Frank listened to Paul’s argument but did not reverse course. Paul was told the decision had already been finalized by the organization.

According to Shelburne, Frank told Chris Paul that the Clippers still intended to coordinate with him on how the announcement would be handled and expressed hope that the team could eventually retire Paul’s jersey.

The Clippers remain in a tailspin, sitting at 6-20, the second-worst record in the Western Conference, and 4.5 games out of the play-in race. The veteran-heavy roster has not only piled up losses but also faces a bleak future, as the OKC Thunder own the Clippers’ unprotected 2026 draft pick.
