John Cena's legendary WWE career will come to an end in December at Saturday Night's Main Event. Meanwhile, a wrestling veteran claims that Chris Jericho fought to save The Franchise Player's career in the Stamford-based promotion.

In 2005, John Cena was moved to Monday Night RAW with the WWE Championship, and The Franchise Player became the face of the company and the red brand for over a decade. However, Scott D'Amore recently claimed that there was a time when the management was uncertain about the multi-time United States Champion.

In The D'Amore Drop, TNA Wrestling's former president claimed that there was a time when Chris Jericho fought with Vince McMahon to save John Cena's career. The doubts were raised in the management's mind when they wanted to send Cena back to OVW due to his gimmick not getting over. Instead, Jericho raised his voice and advocated for The Franchise Player, which saved his career.

"I don’t think it's widely known how hard Jericho fought for Cena at the time. Jericho had been booked to beat Cena and there was talk that “The Prototype” wasn’t ready and needed to be sent back to OVW for more training. When I say Jericho “fought” for Cena to be give a real chance, I mean he got into a raise-voice argument with Vince McMahon — that’s how strongly he believed John had something and was ready. He continued to advocate for Cena, pushing really hard that if only he had some mic time, the thug/rapper gimmick would get over," D'Amore wrote. [H/T - The D'Amore Drop]

D'Amore's claims might be true as he's been around the industry for over two decades.

Who is John Cena's final WWE opponent?

John Cena's illustrious career is set to end in less than eight weeks as Cena will compete as a performer for the final time in Washington, DC, at Saturday Night's Main Event. The retirement run hasn't lived up to expectations, but the 17-time WWE World Champion has had some of the best matches on the card at premium live events.

According to multiple reports, Gunther is slated to be the Leader of the Cenation's final-ever opponent in WWE. The Ring General was also given the task of being Goldberg's last opponent in July 2025, and it seems like the Triple H-led creative regime wants the two-time World Heavyweight Champion to give Cena a proper send-off in December 2025.
