Team India vice-captain Shubman Gill continued his lean tour of Australia with another low score in the ongoing second T20I in Melbourne on October 31. The right-hander was all at sea from the outset before gifting an easy catch to Mitchell Marsh at mid-off.
Gill walked back to the pavilion for a dismal 10-ball five, continuing his abysmal white-ball form in the ongoing Australian tour. The 26-year-old has scored only 85 runs at an average of 21.25 in five matches thus far on the tour.
Gill has also struggled in T20Is since returning to the side before the recent Asia Cup, averaging 24.14 with no half-centuries in nine outings.
Fans on X were unimpressed by Shubman Gill's continued failures in T20Is and reacted as follows:
Thank you @ShubmanGill for all the memories Happy retirement gill #ShubmanGill #INDvsAUS
Shubham Gill has become a walking wicket nowadays. Bad form continues..... #INDvsAUS
No highway 🛣️ no runs that's the shubman Gill. #PAKvSA l #INDvAUS l #CricketFever
Fans continued slamming Shubman Gill for his early dismissal, with one saying:
"Unpopular opinion but Jaiswal Is 100× better than Overrated Gill." "Another day, another bounce, another Gill collapse. But sure, let’s keep forcing the “Prince of Indian batting” narrative on us. Flat-track bully looks royal only till the pitch starts talking. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal waits fearless, hungry, and far more ready," posted a fan. "Shubman gill is the most overhyped player ever . Can't play on good pitches against good bowlers. We have so many options don't know what's obsession of gambhir to play him in t 20's," a fan said.Team India suffers top-order collapse after Shubman Gill's dismissal
Team India endured a massive top-order collapse in the second T20I against Australia in front of a packed crowd at the MCG. After being asked to bat first, the Men in Blue continued losing wickets in a heap after the fall of Shubman Gill.
Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma were back in the dugout for a combined three runs, resulting in India reeling at 32/4 in the fifth over. Things continued to head south when the in-form Axar Patel was run out after a brief stay for a 12-ball seven.
His dismissal meant India slipped to an embarrassing 49/5 in 7.4 overs, with only Abhishek Sharma going great guns on 33* from 13 balls. The opening T20I was washed out due to rain, with India in a dominant position at 97/1 in the 10th over.
However, at 69/5 in 10 overs, the T20 World champions are staring down the barrel of a rare defeat in the shortest format.
