The Pittsburgh Pirates potentially trading generational talent Paul Skenes has become a topic of conversation as of late.
Why? Well, the Pirates have gotten off to a brutal start, fired manager Derek Shelton, and are now trying to figure out which direction they go in.
Do they fire the GM and others and trade away their stars for young assets?
On Thursday, Pirates GM Bib Cherington wanted no part of a Skenes trade, saying that, "It’s not at all part of the conversation.”
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic detailed the Skenes trade front in a few ways, and he even mentioned Skenes as a depreciating asset if the Pirates decide to keep him around.
Skenes is a depreciating asset who will never sign with the Pirates long-term. Fellow right-hander Jared Jones is out until 2026 after undergoing a UCL repair in his elbow. A monster package of major-league-ready hitters for Skenes could align with Jones’ return and the ascent of top pitching prospect Bubba Chandler.
Jared Jones was expected to form a strong 1-2 pitching duo with Skenes, but Jones is now out until the 2026 season after undergoing UCL surgery.
But, what Rosenthal says holds some value. Skenes will never sign long-term with the Pirates, and Pittsburgh probably knows that by this point.
Another MLB executive recently said a Skenes trade could land a package 1.5 times that of the one the Washington Nationals got for Juan Soto, so it could be a franchise-altering move for the Pirates.
But, at this point, the organization seems content keeping him and trying to build around him, although they haven't done that up until this point.
