The Boston Red Sox have four major goals this offseason: re-sign Alex Bregman, get a No. 2 starter, get another slugger, and upgrade their bullpen. However, there may be a fifth goal that’s connected to one of their four.
According to MassLive’s Sean McAdam, the goal is to acquire a second hitter, along with the slugger. And to him, that second hitter is St. Louis Cardinals All-Star utility man Brendan Donovan.
“The St. Louis Cardinals are open to trading infielder Brendan Donovan. He can play either second or third pretty well, and though he hits lefthanded, which is sub-optimal, he’d make some sense for the Red Sox, whose entire infield, save for shortstop, remains undefined. The most appealing part of Donovan’s game for a team looking to make more contact? He puts the ball in play, with a career strikeout rate of just 13.51 percent and a .361 OBP,” McAdam wrote.
This season, Donovan slashed .287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 50 RBI in 118 games played. He also would be a massive defensive upgrade for the Sox’ struggling infield, as his Gold Glove could work wonders at second, or anywhere else they place him.
As a utility man, Donovan can slot into first base, second base, shortstop, third base, the outfield, and DH. And for the Sox, they need all the help they can get in the infield.
Having Donovan start at second, and be a potential backup to Bregman if they re-sign him, or Pete Alonso, who the Sox have been heavily linked to, would be awesome. Hopefully, they realize that, and get talks started so they can acquire both him and Alonso around the same time.
