The Boston Red Sox have acquired Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals this offseason and the AL East franchise are reportedly linked with their former Cardinals teammate Brendan Donovan.

Donovan, who spent the majority of the last season at second base, has been one of the most discussed trade pieces this offseason. His versatility and two years of team control on his contract have made him a lucrative option for teams like the Red Sox, who are looking to bolster their infield.

While Boston has a strong interest in the 28-year-old Gold Glove winner, Donovan has been linked with several teams this offseason. Earlier this month, the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants were leading the race for Donovan, amid interest from the Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Meanwhile, Yoán Moncada is another infielder who is generating a lot of interest this offseason. Moncada, who made his MLB debut for the Red Sox, has been linked with two of his former teams, the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels, in free agency.

Apart from the White Sox and Angels, the Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates have also emerged as potential suitors for Moncada, in a bid to strengthen their infield.

Red Sox remain one of the busiest teams this offseason amid Brendan Donovan links

Brendan Donovan had a solid season for the Cardinals in 2025, batting .287 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs, earning his first All-Star selection. The Red Sox's interest in the utility star comes in the wake of their pursuit of former All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman.

While the Red Sox are strongly linked with a reunion with the former World Series winner, there hasn't been any significant movement in Bregman's free agency this offseason.

Amid their interest in the infield pieces, the Red Sox have reportedly put All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran on the trade block after his underwhelming 2025 season.
