Mitch Marner's Maple Leafs career by the numbers

4 hours ago 2

If you have not heard the news yet and/or been living under a cave, today Mitch Marner was finally traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign and trade move in exchange for Nicholas Roy.

This moment was inevitable. Now, both Marner and the Leafs will get the closure they have been waiting for and both parties can move on. But before that, it is worth taking one final look at the Toronto Maple Leafs career of Mitch Marner.

Marner was drafted to the Leafs in the middle of their rebuild 4th overall in 2015. This was in between Nylander in 2014 and Matthews in 2016. This threesome would go on to make up 3/4s of the Leafs infamous "core four."

After spending one more year in juniors with the London Knights, Marner made his debut in the 16-17 season with 1st overall pick Auston Matthews. Year 1 was a success as Marner dropped over 60 points and the Leafs made the playoffs. Despite the Round 1 exit to the Washington Capitals, the team showed signs of a promising future with this group.

Oh boy would this not be the case. Over the next 5 years the Leafs failed to get out of the 1st Round. It would not be until the 22-23 season where the Leafs finally won a playoff series for the first time since 2004. Surely now the Leafs were poised for a Cup run?

Nope, the Leafs would go on to win 1 more playoff series total in the Marner era, which occurred this past season. This was only to be followed with an pitiful Round 2 Game 7 performance against Florida. And Mitch Marner stood at the center of that mess.

That about sums up Mitch Marner's Leafs career: playoff disappoints. That is not all on him by any means but when you are the hometown boy making as much money as he has, those are the expectations that come with you. In 70 career playoff games, Marner has recorded 13 goals and 50 assists for 63 points in 70 games. That is simply not good enough.

With that being said, Marner's regular season totals have been spotless: 221 goals and 520 assists for 741 points in 657 games. That puts him 5th all time in the entire Leafs franchise's history in production, even ahead of Auston Matthews (for now).

However, Marner's Maple Leafs legacy will sadly be defined by the playoff shortcomings. We'll see if the Leafs can turn around that stigma without him and if Mitch can find greater playoff success with Vegas.
