The Clippers were eying Simmons with a veteran's minimum contract, according to The Athletic, but he wants one of the "exceptions" embedded in the CBA.
The most likely exception that Simmons could be worth is the mid-level exception, which is $5.685 million.
The 6-foot-10 Simmons is far from the player he once was, but a team other than the Clippers may give him that money.
Simmons is 28 years old now, a long time removed from being the No. 1 overall pick in 2016 by the 76ers.
The big lefty missed his first season with an injury. He followed that up with four of the best career start seasons in recent memory.
Since leaving Philadelphia, Simmons has played for the Nets and now the Clippers.
Simmons came to Los Angeles at the trade deadline. It wasn't quite the Luka Doncic deal, but it's still notable to see how much a guy like Simmons is worth at this point of his career.
