Mitch Johnson signals Spurs, Victor Wembanyama's NBA domination has only begun

To say that the San Antonio Spurs have skyrocketed back into title contention in recent years is an understatement. Since drafting Victor Wembanyama, the franchise has been on a sprinting in notching their first Larry O'Brien trophy since Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan still played for the franchise. Not to mention, the freakishly athletic seven-footer is also firmly in the NBA MVP race in just his third season. A long reign awaits this franchise because of their star player and even the head coach knows it.

Johnson knows Spurs, Wembanyama will dominate the NBA

The Spurs currently sit second in the Western Conference standings with 55-18 record. They still have a shot at notching the first seed over the Oklahoma City Thunder too because they won seven-straight games and are just two games back. A lot of this has to do with Wembanyama rising into the superstar that the franchise needed.

Johnson noted how much growth the French superstar has accumulated in past months and even he could not deny that Wembanyama's impact on the floor is still understated, via Jeff Zillgitt of NBA.com.

"It’s a huge part of his growth. He’s really embraced that, understanding how he can dominate the game and create advantages for others whether that’s screening, passing, spacing. The defense at some point has to commit to taking away something and depending on what that is and what they do, it presents him with an opportunity because he is so skilled and so dominant in so many ways," the Spurs head coach said.

Wembanyama is currently averaging career-highs throughout this dominant Spurs campaign. He is grabbing 11.2 rebounds while also knocking down a fair 24.2 points on an insane 50.5% field goal percentage. His effective field goal percentage has also climbed all the way up to a very impressive 56.3% eFG.

Clearly, there is still a lot of room to grow for the Spurs' superstar. However, the NBA and its fans should brace themselves because he will only get better from here. Coach Johnson and the Spurs' next focus is their last nine games. If Wembanyama does lead this team to a league-best record, he could very well be the next NBA MVP.
