Blue Springs South appeared to be down and out in Saturday night’s Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 6 baseball championship game.
The Jaguars trailed Kansas City Staley, 6-0, entering the bottom of the fifth inning. But then, the Jaguars dramatically flipped the script, scoring eight runs that inning as they went on to claim the title with an 8-6 win in Ozark.
Blue Springs South (27-7) was led by Spencer Steutermann, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as part of that eight-run fifth. Grayden Seuferling also went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Wyatt Denney was 2-for-3 as well for the Jaguars.
Wyatt Taylor was the winning pitcher for Blue Springs South, pitching the first five innings and giving up five earned runs on five hits, striking out one. Seuferling went the final two innings to notch the save, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out three.
Staley (38-4) had one player with a multi-hit game, as Brody Irlbeck was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
In the Class 6 third-place game, Parkway South defeated Ft. Zumwalt West, 11-8.
Earlier on Saturday, Platte County claimed the Class 5 state title with a 14-4 win against Vianney, ending a stretch of two state tournament wins in which the Pirates scored a total of 20 runs.
Platte County (29-8) also trailed before putting together a big inning on Saturday, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 12-4 advantage. The Pirates then added two more runs in the fifth to end the game via a run rule.
Dayton Doll drove in five runs, and Brennan McLaughlin homered for Platte County. The Pirates’ top hitter was Rocco Marriott, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Brock Fowler was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Evan Magnuson was the winning pitcher in relief, going the final four innings and giving up two runs on five hits, striking out one.
Vianney, which finished 38-2, was led by Trey Jozwiakowski and Nolan Jaworowski, each of whom went 2-for-3, with Jaworowski driving in two runs.
In the Class 5 third-place game, Rockwood Summit defeated Marshfield, 9-3.
