Mikey Williams transfer portal news creates polarizing possibility for Kansas, LSU

Mikey Williams' basketball journey has taken a lot of turns since the likes of Kansas and LSU recruited the high school phenom.

But now he's the most polarizing prospect in the transfer portal, which he entered on Thursday after a season at Sacramento State. Could the Jayhawks, the Tigers or any other high-major program have interest?

On paper, there are some reasons for intrigue with Williams. He just averaged 17.1 points and 4.5 assists per game for Sac State.

But he also shot just 36.3% from the floor and 26.5% from beyond the arc. Not a perfect player by any means.

And there's more to it than just that with Williams.

Williams originally committed to Memphis out of high school, but he never played for the Tigers. Gun charges led to him entering the transfer portal. He eventually pled guilty to one misdemeanor.

The 6-foot-3 Williams ended up at UCF, and in 2024-25, he averaged 5.1 points per game.

He was once ranked the No. 1 player in his class when he was in eighth grade. He had more than three million followers on Instagram before his junior year of high school.

And now, no one is quite sure what to make of him.

Williams would garner a headline if he went to any sort of bigger program. But there's risk involved, too.

Kansas took a small-school guard, Melvin Council Jr., and used him to great success in 2025-26 after time at junior college, then Wagner, then St. Bonaventure.

Williams' off-court concerns and his inefficiency in small conference hoops may make selling his case tougher to a program like Kansas or LSU, though.

The Tigers do need players for new head coach Will Wade. Maybe they could get involved.

This really could go a ton of different directions, but there'll be attention on it, because he's still Mikey Williams, and that used to mean a lot.
