Mets trade proposal sends Jonah Tong, Carson Benge and others to Padres for three players, including Mason Miller

The New York Mets need to improve their roster, and that doesn’t seem to be a question any longer.

One proposed blockbuster trade from Ryan Phillips of SI might be the best they can do to add multiple players, but the move would also give up a ton of prospect depth.

After losing both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, the Mets need stars, rotation help, and bullpen help. His trade offers that.

Mets receive:
– RP Mason Miller
– SP Nick Pivetta
– OF Ramon Laureano

Padres receive:
– OF Carson Benge (Mets No. 2 prospect)
– SP Jonah Tong (No. 4)
– 2B A.J. Ewing (No. 7)
– SP Will Watson (No. 10)
– Lower-level prospects

“After losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, New York fixes several problems in one deal. Miller is probably the best reliever in baseball and is under team control through the 2029 season. Pivetta is coming off a career year in which he finished sixth in NL Cy Young voting. Laureano slugged .512 in 2025 with an .855 OPS, and is under contract for $6.5 million in 2026. They also don’t have to give up top prospect Nolan McLean to get these three, so that’s a big win for GM David Stearns,” he wrote.

I like the deal, but it’s a lot to give up.

Miller would immediately replace Diaz in the back end of the bullpen and give New York a long-term answer in the ninth inning.

Pivetta adds a reliable rotation arm coming off a few good years, while Laureano also played well in the second half last year.
