The New York Mets have some big decisions to make this offseason.
Will they find a way to bring New York Yankees star Juan Soto to town? Will they bolster their starting rotation with an ace like Corbin Burnes? Has Pete Alonso played his last game as a member of the Mets?
All of these questions and more will be answered over the next few months. The most interesting is the future of Alonso. He has developed into a superstar as a member of the Mets. He is one of the best sluggers in all of baseball and it would be great to bring him back. But, the pursuit of other stars could push him away.
There haven't been any major dominos to fall in free agency yet, but the offseason frenzy should pick up soon. When it does, CBS Sports' Dayn Perry predicted that Alonso will end up landing with the Houston Astros rather than returning to New York.
"Houston could use a primary first baseman who offers them more than Jon Singleton does, and Alonso clears that bar," Perry said. "I think Alonso, as a righty-righty first baseman who's shown some signs of decline in his top-line numbers, is probably going to be disappointed by his market. At least, though, he lands with a contender in this scenario."
This isn't too shocking of a prediction but would be a disappointing outcome. Alonso is a fan-favorite in New York and it would be great to keep him around for the foreseeable future. He is projected to get a $174 million deal this winter. Only time will tell if that will be with the Mets or not.
