The New York Mets will attempt to regroup for 2027.
If there's a season.
MLB's ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations could force a full or partial lockout next year.
If baseball is to be played, the Mets will undoubtedly do their best to improve the roster on both sides of the ball.
The top impending free agent is back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers a few days before the deadline.
If the Dodgers are unable to sign Skubal to a long-term extension or convince him to re-sign during the offseason, the Mets could swoop in.
Mets are 'under-the-radar' threat for Skubal
"The widespread consensus is that Los Angeles was both best equipped to trade for Skubal (check) and best equipped to sign him as a free agent," FanSided's Christopher Kline wrote. "We shall see how CBA negotiations impact the marketplace and L.A.'s ability to continue blowing cash all over the place, but the Mets are an under-the-radar threat here."
The Mets were sellers at this year's deadline. Their postseason hopes are practically slim to none.
New York's rotation depth lessened with the trades of Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays and Clay Holmes to the Chicago Cubs.

Signing Skubal would put a jolt of energy back into the fanbase after a rough season, and Mets owner Steve Cohen could play a huge role in the pursuit of the left-hander.
"Steve Cohen has the deepest pockets in the Majors. If any team can win a bidding war with the two-time defending champs straight up, it's probably the Mets," Kline added. "New York has a need for frontline starting pitching after the Freddy Peralta trade backfired. Skubal and Nolan McLean is one heckuva one-two punch for the foreseeable future, with the Mets' young core on the verge of a breakthrough — one which Skubal can spearhead."
There will be plenty of interested suitors for Skubal. But Cohen's wallet could reign supreme.
