The New York Mets have had a brutal offseason; they lost two superstars in Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz to free agency, and have only made one big trade to land Marcus Semien, but lost Brandon Nimmo in the process.
Now, they need to fill the hole that Nimmo left. According to Fansided’s Chris Landers, the Mets could be a top suitor for Chicago White Sox All-Star outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
“Shipping Brandon Nimmo to Texas created so much attention around the opening in left field that it's easy to forget that the Mets have needed a legitimate starting center fielder for over a year now…Sure, he could always just throw Steve Cohen's money at Kyle Tucker. If that's off the table, though, why not Robert? There really isn't anyone else available (aside from Tucker) with his upside, and his excellent defense in center would allow Benge to shine in a corner and give New York quality gloves alongside Juan Soto. Plus, the Mets have exactly the pitching depth that Chicago reportedly covets,” Landers wrote.
This past season, Robert slashed .223/.297/.364/.661 with 12 doubles, 14 home runs, and 53 RBI in 110 games played. While this seems like low numbers to trade for, keep in mind that the White Sox have been the worst team in baseball history for the past two years. Before that, they were contenders, and he played like an All-Star.
A change of scenery may be perfect for Robert. If he can go to a contender like the Mets, it may draw that All-Star talent out of him again.
Hopefully, the Mets do try their luck at Tucker, but this would be a great backup plan.
