Mets predicted to lose ex-pitcher to Braves in move that could impact NL East race

The New York Mets decided to move on from Frankie Montas during the offseason, designating him for assignment. While that remains the right move for the Mets now, it could come back to bite them if the latest prediction comes true.

FanSided’s Austin Owens predicted that the former Mets right-hander would land with the Atlanta Braves as a midseason free agent. The Braves have been in need of pitching help recently, and the veteran might be one of the better remaining options available.

“One team's released player is another team's treasure (or something like that). This philosophy could potentially be applied to Frankie Montas in 2026. Montas spent last season with the New York Mets and went 3-2 in seven starts with a high (6.28) ERA. The Mets decided there was no room on their roster for the 32-year-old hurler. Now, Montas is just waiting on the best fit.”

Montas’ numbers over the past few seasons have been absolutely horrible, pitching for multiple teams. Frankly, ever since throwing for the then Oakland Athletics, he really hasn't been much. Even in Oakland, he had some struggles on the road as a starter.

However, as most Mets fans like to joke about, it really wouldn't be that surprising to see them get rid of a pitcher and have him go and dominate with the Braves during the year.
