Mets part ways with former Cubs 2016 World Series champion reliever

The New York Mets announced on Thursday that they had designated one of the members from the Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series champion team for assignment. 

Right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. signed a minor league deal with the Mets in December and appeared in just two Major League games with the Mets before the DFA. 

"A key member of the Cubs’ bullpen from 2016-18, Edwards has bounced around the league in the eight years since," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote Thursday. "The Mets are Edwards’ ninth club in the majors, and this year’s six innings already tie his highest single-season workload since 2023." 

Edwards was impressive during his six innings in Queens, striking out 11 of the 25 batters he faced.

He will turn 35 in September and may have to settle for another minor league contract if he does not remain in the organization. 

The Mets have five days to trade, release, or place Edwards on waivers. Outfielder Luis Robert Jr. was announced as going on the injured list in the same update. 

Right-hander Austin Warren and third/first baseman Eric Wagaman had their contracts selected from Triple-A Syracuse in corresponding moves.
